Managers' Toolkit

Line managers play a vital role in creating a highly engaged workforce. Multiple studies have shown that managers who involve, recognise, coach, provide feedback, delegate effectively, build a community and use talent appropriately will lead more engaged teams. Despite this, ICM research highlights that nearly half of employees are not motivated by their line managers.

Engaging managers is one of the four enablers of engagement, so it is vital that managers have the knowledge, skills and practical tools needed to engage with their teams.  They need to be equipped, empowered and inspired to:

  • Communicate the vision, values and behaviours of the organisation to their teams
  • Set team and individual objectives aligned to the overall company vision
  • Understand and respond to the career aspirations of team members
  • Coach and give feedback, including managing challenging conversations
  • Respond proactively to the results of an engagement survey
  • Treat team members as individuals, with respect and empathy
  • Provide an environment of innovation and autonomy rather than command and control

Managers are often appointed on the basis of previous high performance, which may not necessarily be related to people management or engagement skills.

Grass Roots' Managers' Toolkit provides managers with an online portal containing practical engagement tools and solutions needed to increase engagement within their teams.
